Whichever biology science projects you choose to do your science fair project on, you should make sure you are capable of explaining your entire project. The judges want to know that you are knowledgeable about the subject you have chosen. You will also want to make your presentation pleasing to the eye, so be sure it's very organized and tidy. Science Fair Projects - Making a Winning Science Project Step 1 - The Scientific Method Part 2

Project Experimentation
The project experimentation is the fun part of the science fair project - this is where you actually get to prove your hypothesis (or discover that your hypothesis was wrong). In all scientific experiments, you will need to have two variables: a dependent variable and an independent variable. The dependent variable is the thing that will change during your research. A dependent variable is the thing that you are observing. On top of your variables, you will also have a control - the thing that will not change.   For example, in my experiment, my independent variable was each piece of food that I introduced to the surface of the tongue (such as bread, rice, vegetables, and fruit). My dependent variable was the tongue (because I couldn't change it). My controls were salt and sugar because I already knew where salt and sugar were tasted on the tongue.   During your experiment, you can use as many tests as you would like to come up with a conclusion. Be sure to record each test and result accurately so that you can compare your results in your conclusion. You might also find that you need to conduct additional tests during your experiment. If you are allowed to conduct additional tests, do so. If not, you can simply state in your conclusion that the tests were "inconclusive." Ask your teacher for the science fair rules.   Some experiments might be harder than others. For example, sometimes I paid very close attention to where I tasted foods like unsalted crackers. Even then, when I wasn't sure where I tasted some foods, I had to use other people for help. I conducted a survey of 10 people and recorded their answers as part of my research. A survey can be used as part of the experiment to help you solve the problem.   During your research, keep these tips in mind in order to have a successful project:
  • Use only one independent variable
  • Try the experiment as many times as you want in order to make sure the results are accurate. Usually, doing the experiment just once will not give you dependable results.
  • Always use a control - sometimes it's best to have two or more controls just to be safe
  • Stay organized with your notes and data collection.
Project Conclusion The conclusion of the project is the part where you get to share the information that you learned. You should state whether your hypothesis was proven or disproven (don't be embarrassed if your hypothesis was wrong). You can use your research, experiments, and opinions in order to explain the outcome of the project. State any reasons that the project didn't work out as you expected as well.   For example, in my project, I was surprised to find that I tasted rice on the sides of my tongue more than on the front. I didn't think that rice was salty, but my mom had always told me that it was full of starch, which is also sugar. I was talking to my mom after the experiment was over and she told me that she always puts a teaspoon of salt in the rice while it cooks, which I didn't know about when conducting my experiment. In my conclusion, I explained that the unexpected salt could have impacted my results.   Here are some more tips for writing your conclusion:
  • Remember: don't change your hypothesis just because the results were different than you thought they would be.
  • If something happens during the experiment that proves your hypothesis wrong, don't leave it out. Instead, do what I did with the rice and mention why you think the results didn't support the hypothesis.
  • If there is a difference in the hypothesis and results, explain it. It's okay to say that you think you made a mistake during the experiment, like I did with the rice and not knowing it had salt in it.
  • Keep improving the experiment. Are there other things you wish you had done in order to make the experiment better? If so, then explain them in your conclusion.
No matter what project you choose, keep in mind that by following the scientific method, you will not only be able to pull off a well-executed science project, but you'll also impress the judges and find your own conclusions to answers you've asked. Technology, Change And Process Capabilities

Vince Poscente in his book, The Age of Speed (2008), pointed out that "we actually can do more in a given time than we could even five years ago. Therefore, the expectations we face to produce faster are often valid." The idea presented here is revealing, yet at the same time so well understood by everyone. No one can argue the fact that we can do more, faster, because of technology. In many cases we buy the latest technological tools to increase productivity and increase profits. We buy the technology and then proudly sit back and wait for the benefits to materialize. Unfortunately, more often than not, production value remains stagnate or increases only marginally. This causes leadership severe disappointment and fosters a mistrust of technology, or at least the salesman!
Is the technology not working? No, more than likely the technology is capable of increasing productivity, while reducing cost, just as the salesman pitched. The salesman is not selling bogus solutions. It is likely to be your internal processes. You buy new technology to produce faster, but you deploy it in the confines of old processes. Any new technology requires a review of existing processes. If you do not harness the capabilities of the technology and transform the process to utilize them, you will essentially negate any efficiency.
Processes should be viewed as dynamic and able to be modified to meet new circumstances. Let's say the current process is only capable of producing 10 completed units in a day (purchase orders, widgets or whatever). You buy technology that allows a portion of that process to double its productivity to 20 units a day. Outside of that portion you have problems. Doubling the workload of the other portions of the process may not be possible; it may only create a huge bottleneck because the rest of the process is only geared for 10 products a day. Sure you improved a portion of the process, doubled it in fact. What good does that do if it only creates a bottle neck in portions of the process still geared towards 10 units a day? None; it only adds cost and frustration.
Knowing that the new technologies can double production means the rest of the process has to be studied. You have to determine the production capability of the entire process to know the true benefit and cost of the new technologies. Maybe you find that the rest of the process, with minor tweaks, can sustain a production capability of 15 units a day. While you will have to curtail the technology and produce only 15 units a day, versus 20 units a day, there will be no bottlenecks. You will increase production by 50%. Not bad for a starter. You had to invest a little more time, but it surely saved you money and produced less stress for everyone involved. The bottom line is technology can bring improvements, but without processes capable of utilizing the gained efficiencies it matters little.

Understanding How Hospitals Buy Medical Technology

odern hospitals depend heavily on medical technology to diagnose, treat and prevent diseases. A typical mid-sized hospital has hundreds of items of medical equipment, from simple stethoscopes and blood pressure monitors to highly sophisticated MRI machines and linear accelerators. Hospitals are complex enterprises with entire departments dedicated to technology planning, assessment, acquisition, maintenance, upgrade and replacement at the end of the product life cycle. They have elaborate systems, programs, policies, procedures and protocols in place for purchasing new medical equipment.
To sell successfully to healthcare providers, marketing and sales professionals have to be well versed in the buying processes that healthcare providers use. Medical device marketing is quite different from any other marketing. Typically, hospitals have a review process to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate their medical technology needs. The review's scope depends on the cost of the technology, and may involve many departments. For expensive equipment, the review most likely will be elaborate. For less expensive and disposable items, the review may simply assess the department's current needs, and the proposed purchase's operational and financial impacts. In either case, a market survey and literature search take place to some extent, and this is supplemented with extensive data collection and analysis when needed. This is why white papers and case studies published by medical device manufacturers are very useful during the review process - the decision-makers look for every bit of information they can find. Hence, white papers and case studies can significantly influence the decision-making process.
A typical review process includes the following phases:

The process starts with strategic planning. In this top-level phase, the relevant stakeholders (e.g., Directors, Professors, Managers, Doctors, Engineers, Purchasing, etc.) review key issues, success factors and resource allocation, and assign responsibilities for sustained improvement in technological performance. They identify the services their facility provides, and the technologies that would complement their existing services. The typical questions to answer are: Where are we? Where do we want to be? How are we going to get there?
Because medical technology greatly impacts the cost and structure of healthcare delivery, hospitals include technology assessment in their planning process, which typically includes cost-benefit and cost-effectiveness analyses.
Cost-benefit analysis calculates the costs of applying the technology and compares them to the benefits resulting from its application. It provides criteria upon which to base decisions of whether to adopt or reject a proposed device. The device is adopted if its benefits exceed its costs. However, one limitation of this analysis is that it expresses all benefits, including therapeutic effects, in monetary terms. Hence, hospitals also conduct cost-effectiveness analyses to quantify therapeutic effects in terms of reduced patient hospital stays, and compare these to the costs of the technology's implementation. Although at first glance the chosen technology may seem to have limited impact on other facility operations, stakeholders also examine the likely effect of the new equipment on existing services.
Other aspects of cost-effectiveness analysis include assessment of long-term replacement strategies and identification of emerging technologies. Since medical devices have finite longevity, hospitals have replacement plans to minimize the effects of unforeseen capital replacement. By identifying emerging technologies that fit into the projected plans of the hospital's service area, the hospital tries to avoid investing in nearly obsolete technologies.
Purchase of a new technology is justified only when an increase in equipment's cost-effectiveness is clearly demonstrated. The typical questions asked during the analysis are:
* Will the new medical device increase the volume of the service?
* Will it raise the costs of the service?
* Will the device generate additional revenues and, if so, how much?
* What is the new device's expected lifespan?
* What is the device's reliability and the costs associated with its repair and maintenance?
* How reliable and reputable is the manufacturer?
* What impact will the new device have on routine operating costs?
* What will the disposal cost be?
* How easy is the device to operate?
Once the technology has been assessed and the decision to purchase has been made, the next phase in the process is technology acquisition, which typically includes the following steps:
* Preparation of general and functional specifications
* Clinical, technical and cost evaluations
* Review of proposals and evaluations, and making a final decision on a device manufacturer
* Contract negotiation for the device's acquisition
* Preparation and issuance of a purchase order
* Contract award
